First Trimester | Second Trimester | Third Trimester

YOUR PREGNANCY

What is happening in your body and when.

Week 13 Getting a-head

Your uterus is becoming larger and starting to rise out of the pelvis. The fetus can now move its head quite easily.

Week 14 - 15 A third of the way through

The average pregnancy lasts 266 days or 280 days from the first day of the last period. The placenta is now fully functioning.

Week 16 Hair-raising

The fetus now has toe and finger nails, eyebrows and lashes and is covered with downy hair that will last until the final stages of pregnancy. Called lanugo, the hair is very fine - more like down - and probably serves as some form of insulation and protection for the skin.

Week 17 What was that?

By this stage your uterus will be rising and you will be visibly pregnant. Your baby will now begin to hear noises from the outside world.

Week 18 Just getting comfortable

Now the fetus is moving around a lot - probably enough for you to feel your baby getting comfy.

Week 19 Getting bigger

The fetus is now about 15-20cm long, weighs around 300g and begun to form milk teeth in the gums.

Week 20 Half way through

Time for another scan which shows the fetus in fine detail and this is where parents can often find out if their baby is a boy or a girl. The fetus itself develops a waxy coating called vernix.

Week 21 Short of Breath?

This may be because your uterus is pushing against your diaphragm, leaving less space for the lungs.

Week 22 Making sense

Your babys taste buds have started to form on its tongue and the fetus starts to feel touch.

Week 23 Bone development

The fetus skeleton continues to develop and bones that form the skull begin to harden - but not fully.

Week 24 Check up

We recommend an antenatal check up with a midwife to check the baby's position. This may lead to another scan.

Week 25 All present and correct

The fetus organs are all in place now and the rest of the pregnancy is for growth.

Week 26 Adding colour to the skin

The fetus skin is gradually becoming more opaque than transparent.
