1000th baby born in the new maternity unit at the Queen Alexandra HospitalPortsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust is delighted to announce the birth of the 1000th baby in its new state-of-the-art maternity unit at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham. Rudy Williams was born at 2.31am on Wednesday 9th September 2009, just eight minutes after his twin sister Roxy, who was the 999th baby born in the new unit. The twins weighed in at four pounds one ounce and three pounds seven ounces respectively, much to the joy of parents Barry and Kerry Williams. The babies are currently in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where they are continuing to make good progress. Donna Ockenden, Chief Midwife and Divisional Clinical Director of Women’s and Children’s Services at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said “Every baby is special to us and their parents but we are thrilled to have helped in the safe arrival of the 999th and 1000th babies in our new maternity unit. “Since moving to our new facilities, our excellent team of staff have settled in quickly and supported the delivery of a record number of babies in July and August”. Commenting on the new facilities at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Sarah Barton, Chair of Portsmouth and South East Hants Maternity Services Liaison Committee, said: “When speaking to the local women about their experiences of the new maternity unit at Queen Alexandra Hospital there has been an overwhelmingly positive response, with women saying how appealing it was to have their babies in this new and modern unit". “One comment was that they seem to have really thought about what women and parents to-be would want. I’m really proud to be associated with the unit and am so pleased that the local women now have this fantastic facility". 16 September 2009
