Glossary

As with most new things in life, there are a few terms that you need to understand, so here are some brief explanations for words that, if you aren’t familiar with them now, you certainly will be in a few months’ time.

Midwife

Midwives are healthcare practitioners who meet with expectant mothers to give advice and care during pregnancy, attend births to aid delivery and support new mothers in caring for their babies.

Trained to recognise any changes or unusual circumstances, a Midwife’s purpose is to help women enjoy a happy, healthy pregnancy and natural birth experience. Each individual in our care is allocated to a team of Midwives who work together to ensure continuity and consistency wherever possible.

Literally meaning ‘with woman’, a Midwife’s role is to be ‘with you’.

Consultants

‘Consultant’ is the name given to senior doctors that have completed training in their area of specialism. Portsmouth Hospital NHS Trust has many experienced Consultants with a wide range of skills and expertise to enable you to have a safe and healthy pregnancy.

Sometimes, a Midwife may need to refer an individual in her care to a Consultant. For example, if an expectant mother has a medical condition such as diabetes, a Consultant will closely follow the progress of a pregnancy and provide expert advice alongside Midwifery care.

Based at the Maternity Unit in Queen Alexandra Hospital where they can see you on any day of the week, our Consultants also travel regularly to conduct clinics throughout the district (see below) so their support is accessible and convenient for anyone in need.

Antenatal

This word means ‘before birth’.

Postnatal

This word means ‘after the birth’.

Antenatal Clinic

This is the term used when a Midwife or Consultant is available to see any women who have been referred for individual appointments. Portsmouth Hospital NHS Trust runs Antenatal Clinics in Petersfield, Fareham, Gosport, Havant and Waterlooville.
